The changes that rebounded throughout Greek society during the Archaic period were also reflected in many characteristics of the Greek religion. The rituals of sacrifice, libation and purification, although they were not the same in every city, complied with the general rules of the relationship between man and the divine, and with those of offerings and exchanges. The festivals followed specific ceremonial procedures with seasonal regularity. Gradually, some of the tributes paid initially to the dead and heroes, such as the games, were attributed to the gods. Ancient rituals of initiation, during that period, altered their social character, expanded their popular base and were crystallized in mystery worship.
