In ancient times there were no lawyers, as such, in the courts. The person appearing in the trial, whether as plaintiff or defendant, would put his case, addressing the jury in a speech written to order for him by a specialist orator (the 'speech-writer'). He would learn it by heart, so as to deliver it during the trial. Two of the best-known forensic orators were Lysias and Isaeus.
