International Conference "Athletics, Society & Identity"

The Foundation of the Hellenic World (FHW) is hosting the International Conference, "Athletics, Society and Identity". The conference will take place in Athens at the Foundation's Cultural Centre Hellenic Cosmos between 26 and 29 May 2004.

This conference reflects the Foundation's objective to focus on the study, preservation and dissemination of Hellenic culture. For many cultures the Games were primarily an indispensable part of religious expression; but the ancient Greeks viewed the relationship between athletic exercise and intellectual activity from the perspective of education and philosophy as well. In works of art the athlete was represented as the model citizen. Furthermore, athletic competitions, as an essential part of religious festivals, proved to be an expression of identity for those who took part. The supreme illustration of this was found in the attraction of the Olympic Games for Greek athletes from all over the ancient world. Indeed even, and perhaps especially, during the Roman period, the political aspect of the Games was significant.

As the religious character of the Games declined, the phenomenon of social divisions expressed through athletics became more manifest. New sports were created, which characterized and continue to characterize specific social groups. Expulsion from the Olympic Games in specific political circumstances has become a recurring feature. Moreover, the body-sport-intellect relationship has changed. This is why to study history at its deepest levels and to compare its patterns across the centuries can lead to an understanding that will, in turn, create tools for the building of a better future.

The forthcoming conference will examine aspects of all these issues, since the participating researchers will represent the whole spectrum of the humanities. We can expect original speeches and lively debates.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Lazaros Efraimoglou
President of the Foundation of the Hellenic World
