CONFERENCES

The Department of History and Archaeology organized the conference “Athletics, Society and Identity”. The conference, which took place in Athens from the 26th to the 29th of May 2004 and was under the auspices of the General Secretariat of the Olympic Games, dealt with the function of athletics as a social phenomenon in the Greek-Roman Antiquity and Modern Times. Its objective is to enlighten the ways athletics reflects and influences in its turn the social, political, economic, cultural and ideological realities of its era. Particular emphasis was paid to the way through which individuals and social groups, through their participation in athletic competitions, shape and experience the various aspects of their national, social and cultural identity.

The conference approached its thematic field through the analytical and methodological tools of history, sociology, social anthropology, international studies and studies about leisure time, genders and culture.
