The Encyclopedia of the Hellenic World (EHW)   is an original project in electronic format, dealing with the collection, recording, documentation, presentation and promotion of the historical data of the presence of the Hellenic cultural element in its evolution through space and time.

The project’s objective is the thorough examination of the development, spatial dispersion and temporal evolution of the Hellenic cultural phenomenon, based on the methods and the conclusions of modern research. The issues under examination are part of the framework that was created in relation to the history of every geographical area and the non Greek cultural traditions. Historical information in organized in independent entries of five categories: place names, people, events, buildings and entries of general content, which cover social, cultural, economic and other issues. In order for the presentation to be as complete as possible, information is structured on many levels (texts, footnotes, chronologies, glossaries, abstracts of entries, bibliography, documentation, captions of visual material) and types (text, static and animated image, sound) fully utilizing the multimedia technology and with advanced interactivity. In the project's elaboration participates a wide range of scientists of various specialties (historians, archaeologists, architects, social anthropologists etc) from various countries of the world, while its validity is checked by a Scientific Committee of academic professors.



The complete work is structured in spatial units. Its first part is already available on the Internet, free of charge, while it is continuously enriched with additional entries. It covers the Greek presence and activity in Asia Minor from Antiquity to 1930. The second and the third part of the project are in this period (2008) under development and deal respectively with the diachronic presence of Greeks in Constantinople and the Black Sea.
