Georgios Averof

Georgios Averof, born in Metsovo of Epirus in 1818, has settled in Alexandria. He financed the erection of the Technical University of Athens, the Military Academy, the Juvenile Prison, of the Gymnasium and the Institute for Young Girls in Alexandria.

When the Committee for the erection of the Panathenaic Stadium asked him to contribute to the works, he was willing to help. Indeed both he and the rest of the Greeks in Alexandria donated 585,000 drachmas, which was the largest part of the amount spent. On the eve of the Games his statue was erected in front of the stadium, in honor of his contribution.
