Athens - Monument of Eponymous Heroes

An oblong structure in the ancient Agora of Athens, near the east side of the old Bouleuterion, founded during the second half of the 4th century BC. It was built in the form of an oblong high pedestal carrying bronze statues of the ten mythological heroes after whom the tribes of Athens were named.

The front, west side of the monument served as a pubic notice board. There, on wooden boards painted in white, according to ancient writers, they used to hang notices such as lists for military conscription, public honours, and legislation to be submitted to the Ekklesia. On the oblong pedestal were the bronze statues of the ten fabled heroes of Attika (Eponymoi), after which the ten civil divisions (tribes) of the city were named.

Today only foundations are preserved in place.
