Athens - Iliaia

Iliaia used to be the largest juridical body of ancient Athens. It is presumed that they used to meet on an open space at the south side of the Agora.

Along with Areios Pagos, it was the most competent team for trials of civil and criminal cases. It had 6.000 members, which used to meet in quorum or in divisions of 501, 1001, 1501, or 2001 members.

Every citizen 30 years of age or older, could be a member, as long as one was a legitimate citizen and there were no accusations against one. In addition, in order to facilitate participation of the poorest citizents, judicial wage was enacted by law, and at the time of Pericles it was two to three obols.
