The educational book about ancient Olympia starts with an examination of the siteΆs history and then there is a description of the religious site of the Altis, where the faithful gathered to honor Zeus. The Altis stood at the centre of the ancient site and the athletic games were related to it. It included buildings, such as the temple of Hera, the Prytaneion, which functioned as the seat of the Prytaneis responsible for the administration of the sanctuary and the Games, the Philippeion, a dedication of Philip II, the Nymphaeum, a public building, and the Pelopion, a sacred sanctuary in honor of the mythic hero of Olympia Pelops. A special place in the Altis was occupied by the temple of Zeus, which housed the gold and ivory statue of the god, one of the seven wonders of the world.
Then, the athletic areas are presented, such as the Stadium, the Gymnasium and the Palaestra, while there is a detailed reference to the events of the ancient Olympic Games, the rules and the way the Games were conducted and to athletes that excelled in them. The visit is completed with the museums of Olympia and with a reference to FHWΆs Virtual Reality programmes that have to do with ancient Olympia.
