This book, which combines elements of a novel, a mystery book and knowledge book, constitutes the meeting place of myth and history, in order to bring to life various Fayum portraits: Dimitris, Zenovia, Eftihis, Dimo, Hermione, but also Evropea, the woman with the emeralds, and many others. Human feelings, like love, sorrow and humility, which are depicted in the portraits and at the same time emerge from the stories of Miss Julia, the mysterious English woman archaeologist, through which the portraits speak and narrate their stories. The reader of the book has the opportunity to learn the stories of simple people: the melancholic youth, whose pessimism was reflected on his face, the "Jew" woman, named like this he worked hard all his life and the toil characterized her expression, Dimo, who lost her little girl due to high fever and from that moment despair was firmly rooted in her heart, Zenovia who came from an aristocratic family and since she continuously argued with the artist that created her portrait, they called her “brawler”.

The book also includes an appendix with valuable information about the Fayum portraits, the history and the technique used in their creation, but also their relation to other forms of art, like the Byzantine painting. In the end of the book there are games and activities that are based on the stories of the portraits.

For this book, the author Ms Sophia Gialouraki received, jointly and by a majority, the Knowledge Book for Children Award, as part of the State Literature Awards for ChildrenΆs Books, which were announced by the Ministry of Culture for the publications of 2007.
