he administration of justice in the Late Byzantine world seems to have been the work of two separate institutions, depending on the kind of case. Secular courts were responsible for all the civil and penal cases involving citiznes, while the ecclesiastical courts, since 1107, dealt with disputes concerning family and inheritance laws, and often with cases of usury as well.
