Glasswork in the Early Byzantine
period
Glass was another popular material for inexpensive
utilitarian objects, such
as cups, pitchers, cosmetics' bottles and oil-containers for
chandeliers. Most Early Byzantine glass vessels were made
by blowing, a method used to produce quickly a large number
of thin-walled, transparent objects. Some pieces were blown
into molds decorated with Christian or Jewish motifs. Luxury
glass includes dishes and bowls with gold-foil medallions
as centrepieces, the bases of which are frequently found in
catacombs. Glass was also used for mosaic tesserae, window
panes, beads and mirrors.
