EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Where and when were coins invented and which role did they play in commerce? What is hidden behind the representations on them? Where there international and common coins in Antiquity? The coin, small and light, facilitated transactions among the people. The representations, which had been accurately depicted on such small surfaces and included scenes from mythology, heroes, gods and semi-gods, transformed them into an art form.

The students, through FHW's excellent numismatic collection and various activities, come into contact with the basic sources of inspiration of ancient Greek engravers. They discover characteristic elements of a city, like the gods they worshipped, the resources, its history and cultural identity, since coins were the symbol of the city and a medium for commercial transactions.
