The Municipality of Athens honored the Foundation with the Medal of Honor and Charity of the city of Athens, recognising its work and social contribution.
The Mayor of Athens Mr Dimitris Avramopoulos awarded the medal to the President of the Foundation Mr Lazaros Efraimoglou, during the official event that took place at the Town Hall on Holy Thursday 10 April 2001.

The mayor of Athens in his salutation pointed out the Foundation's inspired idea to contribute to the propagation and preservation of Greek history and culture with the use of modern technology. In addition, he added that it is very important in present day Greece to have organisations that realise such an enormous work.

In his response the President of FHW Mr Lazaros Efraimoglou thanked the Municipality of Athens for the supreme honor of the award of the medal, on behalf of all the members, associates and friends of the Foundation.
Characteristically he said: "The Foundation of the Hellenic World is not named after its founders as it was customary in the previous century. The reason is simple: it wants to honor as much as possible Hellenism itself, something we consider synonymous with Man, with the supreme values of life, with all these ideals that is worth experiencing and serving". Then, the President emphasised that the "Foundation of the Hellenic World was created with a long term programme and aims at providing education to the following generations and creating culture. We try to overcome the dilemmas of the past between spirit and matter, between humanities and technology and to synthesise them into a common objective".

The event came to an end with the performance of Manos Hatzidakis' song "Athens" by the Philharmonic of Athens, orchestrated and adapted by Alexandros Katsios. The day of the award the Town Hall was crowded with friends and associates of the Foundation and the reception was very warm.

The award ceremony attended, among others, the President of the Academy of Athens Mr Nikolaos Konomis, the academics Mr Nikolaos Matsaniotis, Mr Konstantinos Despotopoulos and Mr Nikolaos Artemiadis, the academic Mr Giagos Pesmatzoglou and his wife, the ambassador Mr Elias Kli and his wife, the ambassador Mr Vasilis Vitsaxis, the President of the State Council Mr Hristos Geraris, the Mayor of Trikolonon Mr Georgios Baroutsas, Mr S. Kapralos as a representative of the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games of "Athens 2004", the President of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation Mrs Ioanna Papantoniou, the President of ELIA Mr M. Haritatos, Mr Th. Papalexopoulos, Mr Th. Papandropoulos, Mr A. Millas and many other friends of the Foundation.
