Comprehensive Literature Review

The objective of a comprehensive literature review is to assess in full the current state of scholarship on spatial references in ancient Greek epinician poetry. The review will create a typology for investigating various aspects of place and space in the corpus by taking into account all the studies that include analysis of geography, landscape, and spatial designations in the odes.

Investigation of Geographical Locations Referenced in Victory Odes: Sites of the Athletic Competitions

The objective of this component is to integrate all relevant cultural information (literary, historical, but, most importantly, topographical and archaeological) for understanding the Athletic Competitions spaces-sites (re)created in and by the odes. A project involving space and geography cannot be adequately undertaken without a first-hand experience of the geophysical features of the regions in question and of the sites of uncovered architectural remains.

Based on the template and questions of the general description and of the previous component, the objective of this particular component is to integrate all relevant cultural information (literary, historical, but, most importantly, topographical and archaeological) for understanding the victor’s hometowns spaces-sites (re)created in and by the odes. What needs to be underlined is that a project involving space and geography cannot be adequately undertaken without a first-hand experience of the geophysical features of the regions in question and of the sites of uncovered architectural remains. Consequently, most of the activities in this component will consist of visits to publicly open sites of archaeological investigations and their accompanying museums, as well as the regions which feature prominently in the epinician corpus. The tasks involved in this as well as the previous component are designed to support the implementation of the next-core component of this research.

Development and implementation of a Methodology for analyzing victory odes as “maps”.

The work that has to be done in this component is essential for completing the post-doc research. Based on the comprehensive literature review as well as the visits-investigation to the sites, both athletic competition sites and victors’ hometowns, we will develop and implement the methodology that will enable us to analyse the epinician odes as “maps” and answer to questions connected to previous components and this research in general.

Dissemination activities

The objective of this component is to disseminate information regarding the project and its research results (intermediate and final). The successful implementation of this component will guarantee a wide impact of the research results achieved in the scope of this project, by allowing the information to be propagated to those communities and individuals who may benefit the most from it, or whose work may be impacted the most.
