The Long jumping gear
Unlike modern jumping, in which the only equipment used is the jumper's footwear, the first Olympic athletes used stone or lead weights called halteres, which appeared in various shapes. The main shapes during the 6th and 5th century BC were the oblong or sphere shaped ones. Others were simple cones with cavities so that the athlete could handle them easily. Their weight varied, beginning at 1610 gr and reaching, in the case of some votive objects, 4629 gr. The athletes used them in order to improve their performance.
