Various social and ideological trends and movements found fertile ground for development in the favourable framework of the first decades of the century. For Feminist women of the inter-war period, Feminism was associated with the awakening of women and their refusal to accept their subordinate social position. For this reason, they clashed with the dominant - totally opposite - view that insisted on their special role in the family because of the 'natural' capacities of their sex. Their primary demand for 'equal social integration' was basically articulated on two fronts: the claim for women's suffrage and the revision of the existing legislative framework which undermined in various ways their capacity for development and economic emancipation. Apparently, the attempt to form such a social conscience in the Greek society of the time met with huge obstacles.
