The inter-war period, marked as it was by the international crisis, was considered a unique opportunity for the Orthodox Church to recover lost ground. The revival of religious feeling and the awareness of Christian morality were the weapons the Church used in her struggle against materialism, which was considered the main enemy in the reconstruction of social life on the basis of Greek-Christian and Classical ideals. Wider population groups, in particular the petit bourgeois, supported this regulatory initiative that represented conservative ideological opinion in the context of social life.
